Make a Gift! Make a Difference!
For many of our musicians, their favorite moments don’t take place on stage, they take place in classrooms.
During the course of the school year our musicians have the privilege of working with teachers throughout Arizona to use music to teach kids science, technology, engineering, and math lessons. It’s all part of The Phoenix Symphony’s Mind Over Music™ program.
Mind Over Music is the first symphony program of its kind in the nation. It is a professional development model in which teachers are trained to integrate music into STEM concepts. Together, the musicians and teachers create ground-up lesson plans utilizing music as a means to teach STEM initiatives. Their extraordinary collaboration results in not only truly unique lesson plans, but curriculum that has been tested and proven to significantly increase the retention, logic, and aptitude of students.
Although other symphonies conduct STEM-related workshops in schools, The Phoenix Symphony is the only orchestra in the country to implement a collaborative, instructional model and collect measurable data to show the importance of music in the core curriculum. During the 2017-18 school year, Mind Over Music was offered in ten schools and reached 3,000 students. Students participating in this program showed greater growth and achievement on state standardized tests than their peers. On average, students scored 17 points higher on science questions, 13 points higher on math questions, 10 points higher on language arts questions, and 13 points higher on all subjects combined.
