Phoenix Symphony Assistant Conductor Kayoko Dan showcased with the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra for National Audience
American Symphony Orchestra League Biannual Bruno Walter National Conductor Preview March 13-14, 2007
(PHOENIX) – The American Symphony Orchestra League selected Kayoko Dan as one of the conductors showcased in The 2007 Bruno Walter National Conductor Preview. The Preview, which is held every other year, is a two-day event that brings together highly talented conductors, who have not yet had significant exposure in the United States, with representatives from American orchestras.
Ms. Dan has served as the Assistant Conductor for The Phoenix Symphony since summer of 2005. She has taken a leadership role in The Phoenix Symphony's education programs, serving on the Education Committee, helping to determine and create educational initiatives and to expand educational programs.
The winning conductors were chosen by an anonymous panel of conductors, administrators, and artist managers from a pool of 205 applicants. They were judged primarily on experience, talent, and their potential to assume a greater role with an American orchestra.
League President and CEO Henry Fogel said, “The Bruno Walter National Conductor Preview brings together a constellation of talent, providing a major service to orchestras who are searching for a music director and for conductors who are ready to take on greater responsibility in American orchestras. Helping to launch the careers of and providing resources for talented American conductors is a natural extension of the League's work in learning and leadership development.”
On March 13 and 14, the eight conductors led the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra in front of an audience comprised of music director search committees, artistic administrators, and artist managers from across the United States. Each participant has one hour of podium time, allowing orchestra officials and managers the chance to witness rehearsal techniques and abilities first hand.
Since 1995, 54 conductors have been showcased in The Bruno Walter National Conductor Preview, and more than 50 orchestras have engaged these conductors for various appointments as a direct result of the Preview.
About The Bruno Walter Memorial Foundation: The Bruno Walter Memorial Foundation was formed in 1963 by Bruno Walter's daughter, Lotte W. Lindt, and several of his friends to perpetuate and honor the memory of Maestro Walter and to continue his lifelong interest in, and support of, musicians. Over the past forty years the Foundation has established a scholarship program for conducting students at the Juilliard School in New York, provided cash awards to winners in the Metropolitan Opera National Auditions, and helped numerous arts-related institutions with operating support, including the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, and the New York Philharmonic.
