Symphony for the Schools

Children The Phoenix Symphony's premier education program "Symphony for the Schools" provides outstanding educational and musical experiences for youth of Arizona. Each year, more than 30,000 students from across the Valley and central Arizona participate in these 40 minute programs designed to introduce the exciting world of music and the symphony to students. These daytime concerts and accompanying teacher resources have been developed using disciplines from Arizona Arts Standards. These concerts are recommended for grades K-8.

Let it Snow

December 1, 2, & 3, 2010
Daily performances at 10:00AM and 11:45AM

It’s a snowy adventure with The Phoenix Symphony as we celebrate the holiday season with a delightful concert designed for students in grades K-8. Led by audience favorite Bob Moody, Symphony Hall will be transformed into a magical wonderland with music from your favorite holiday tunes. Join us for the annual audience Sing-Along and the joyful tradition of music during this special season.

Most appropriate for grades K-8.

Wild Wild West

February 23 & 24, 2011
Daily performances at 10:00AM and 11:45AM

Thanks to the generosity of Target™, we welcome you to celebrate Arizona’s birthday for FREE with a special trip to the Symphony! Back by popular demand, this is a special concert of music inspired by the history, land and people of our great state. Join Assistant Conductor Joseph Young and the orchestra for a concert depicting desert landscapes, olden time cowboys, and music from Grand Canyon Suite. Students are invited to participate in an essay contest to share their thoughts on Arizona places, people, and issues. More information will be available on our website this fall.

Dances in the Desert

April 26 & 27, 2011
Daily performances at 10:00AM and 11:45AM

Swing into Symphony Hall for a concert dedicated to music and dance, where students are the stars! Assistant Conductor, Joseph Young and The Phoenix Symphony leads students through dances from around the world complete with Bartók’s Hungarian Sketches, ballet, polka, flamenco and more. Be sure to participate in the annual Paint, Poetry, and Movement to Music competition for a chance to shine live with the orchestra. More information will be available on our website after winter break.

Payment in full or a district purchase order is due at the time of reservation. Please do not send cash. Sorry, but no reservations can be accepted over the telephone. Please note that reservations are subject to availability due to limited seating. Cancellations must be made in writing or via email at least thirty days prior to the concert date to be honored. Email cancellations to education@phoenixsymphony.org.


Additional Concert Information

Admission Fee:

$3 per student and all adults
$1 per student from Title 1 schools
Payment must be received with all reservations.

Concert Location:

We're in the newly renovated Symphony Hall, located at 75 North 2nd Street in downtown Phoenix.

Concert Duration:

Approximately 40 minutes.

Preparation:

A packet containing logistical information, such as order confirmation, directions, parking, and general information about your Symphony field trip will be sent once your reservation has been processed.

Transportation:

Transportation is the responsibility of all schools and groups attending the concert. Using the order form, schools must request bus passes for the number of buses required for transportation. Maps and further parking instructions will be included with the teacher packet.

Music Mentors

Music Mentors are music education volunteers and members of the Phoenix Symphony Auxiliary who visit schools around the Valley to introduce The Phoenix Symphony and symphonic music to students prior to their attendance to "Symphony For The Schools" concerts. The Mentors' objectives are to provide an exciting, enthusiastic, and musically-filled presentation as well as preparing students for their Phoenix Symphony performance. Teacher Resources

A Teacher's Guide  and Concert Education Guide are developed to introduce concert information and offer pre- and post-concert integrated curriculum activities. Both guides are developed using the Arizona Arts & Academic Standards (adopted by the Arizona State Board of Education) and can be viewed online by clicking here.
