The Phoenix Symphony promotes music education, performance, and learning for music lovers of all ages and backgrounds. The following paragraphs offer a brief overview of our many community programs.
One Nation
Now in its sixth year, this unique partnership between The Phoenix Symphony and the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community is designed to increase access to the Symphony's programs and performances for a broader community. "One Nation" builds relationships in a manner that develop new audiences for the performing arts and enhances the fundamental music education programs of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community's Schools. ¡Abraze La Música!
Translated, "Embrace the Music", this program is in partnership with Phoenix-based Chicanos Por La Causa and engages youth aged 16-21 and their families in a music education and enrichment experience centered around nine 2005-06 Symphony concerts, South American and Hispanic guest conductors and other Symphony Guest Artists. Through this exciting collaboration, the goals are to create interest in and understanding of symphonic music for the economically-disadvantaged youth who have had involvement with the judicial system and have dropped out of school. This program also serves to provide positive role models through on-site visits and interaction with Symphony musicians and guest conductors in preparation for concert attendance.
Armonía
Translated, "Harmony", this program is in partnership with Espiritu Community Development Corporation (ECDC), based in South Phoenix. The goal of Armonía is to bring the performances and programs of The Phoenix Symphony together with the community of South Mountain Village in Phoenix in order to inspire appreciation of symphonic music, and to supplement the music education program of low-income, ECDC operated NFL-YET College Prep Academy. A variety of activities will continue in 2005-06, including private instrument instruction for the music students at NFL-YET school, community concerts, music workshops, and tickets to concerts in downtown Phoenix.
21st Century Community Learning Center After School Program
The Phoenix Symphony participates in this innovative after school arts education program in the Phoenix Elementary School District No. 1 with nine other Valley arts organizations. Administered by the Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture, this project establishes new and alternative pathways to meeting the state's standards in reading, writing, and mathematics with and through arts and academic assistance programs for underserved and low-income students. Funding for this program is awarded by the Federal Department of Education through the Arizona Department of Education.
Symphony Connections
This program, in partnership with Maricopa Community Colleges, is designed in the spirit of Classroom Concerts, and developed for students and members of the community more experienced in age. Interactive by nature, this program provides an engaging musical experience.
Other components include Master Classes and lecture/demonstrations on college campuses by Symphony musicians, and tickets to select concerts as part of the Symphony's regular Classics Series.
People's Pops Concerts
In collaboration with the City of Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department, The Phoenix Symphony each season presents a series of free Symphony concerts. Our 2007-08 concerts are on October 7, February 10, and May 4. Admission is free, but tickets are required. Concerts will be held at Symphony Hall and tickets can be picked up at any Phoenix Public Library location beginning 8 days prior to each concert.
Summer Radio Broadcasts on KBAQ
Each year, classical radio station KBAQ (89.5 FM) offers a summer-long encore of Phoenix Symphony concerts. Every Monday night at 7:00 p.m., from June to September, KBAQ broadcasts a full-length Classics concert from the previous season. KBAQ's music director Sterling Beaff is the series host and announcer, leading you through these live concert recordings from Arizona's only full-time symphony orchestra.
